Martha didn't know that he meant he would rise again that very same day: "I know he will rise again. This will happen when people are raised from the dead on the last day", she said (John 11:24). Jesus reassured her that he would rise again. She was distraught and cried out to Jesus that if he had just been there, Lazarus would not have died. Lazarus had died and was in his tomb for 4 days at this point. When they were coming near to Bethany, Martha came to meet Jesus. Thomas, one of the disciples, was resigned to the fact that if they went, Jesus would die, and so they would die with him. But Jesus ignored that warning and told them that Lazarus had died and he was going to do something about it. He told his disciples that they would go back to Judea (the region Jerusalem was in), but the disciples were concerned because Jews there had recently threatened his life. Jesus was good friends with all of them, and he heard that Lazarus was sick. Mary, Martha, and Lazarus were from Bethany, a town about 2 miles outside of Jerusalem on the other side of the Mount of Olives. But we also see his humanity as he has close friends (Mary, Martha, and Lazarus), feels great emotion for them, and is deeply moved by their sorrow. He has the power over death, communicates directly with the Father, and we see a clear confession of Christ as the Messiah from Martha. In this story, we clearly see both the divinity and humanity of Jesus. Ask Him to help you trust Him always. This is a famous story, and is a good conclusion to this series of lessons on Jesus' miracles. Pray and thank God that nothing is impossible with Him. Share how Jesus knows our names and wants to give us spiritual life. Jesus called him by name and gave him life again. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Use hand motions to help learn the verse.ĭiscuss what it means for something to be impossible, possible, or unlikely. Explain how Lazarus was dead when Jesus arrived. Today is …, so yesterday was …, and tomorrow will be… An easy way is with the days of the week. Review past, present, and future with your child. She says how things could have been different and will be in the future, but not now. When Jesus arrives, Martha rushes out to Him. He is making the tapestry in ways we don’t understand. Explain that we may think something that happens is terrible because we can’t see it as God does. Turn over the tapestry and show that it is beautiful. Talk about how it isn’t beautiful at all. If you have a tapestry or other piece of embroidery, show the child the back of it. Sometimes, we might be upset or afraid about something that happens, but Jesus has a plan. But God’s timing is perfect and different than our own. Explain how that is difficult for us to understand because we would rush to our friends in need. Instead, Jesus spent two more days where He was, and during that time, Lazarus dies. When Jesus heard that Lazarus was ill, He didn’t run to Lazarus’ side and heal him. Share how we can talk to Jesus about the things which worry us and pray for others who are unwell. Mary and Martha loved their brother, so they did the right thing. Talk about how Lazarus became extremely sick. Example: Is sharing Jesus caring for them or not? Is fighting over toys loving or not? Talk about ways we can show friends we care. Review what we learned about Mary and Martha in the previous lesson. Ask your children what it means to be a friend? Remind them that Jesus was friends with Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha.
